The Internet (and related communication technologies) highlights the value of standards, abstraction, stable interfaces and conventions. His interest in complexity and computability illuminate questions that arise daily in distributed, networked environments. What computations can we rely on in the presence of information of variable provenance? Is convergence assured despite the dynamics of network state? What kinds of algorithms can be relied on to operated in a distributed, parallel fashion? There may be more questions than answers, but this is precisely the condition that spurs new research. |
